Welcome!

Hi, my name is Neil. I’m your resident computer guy.

Who I am

In June 2023, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Currently, I am a teaching assistant in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at my alma mater.

My interests are too varied to ever hope to list here concisely. Currently, I am very intrigued by programming language design, after taking CS4215 as an undergraduate. I am also reading about emerging memory technologies, especially ReRAM, and its potential applications in designing low-power machine learning accelerators.

What I do

I am currently working on Dust, an interpreter for the Rust Programming Language, also written in Rust. This was my CS4215 project, and my teammate and I are currently working on adding more language features. We’ve been busy with the usual after-graduation business, but now that we’ve settled in, expect to see some big updates.

What I like

  • I follow Formula 1 racing, and occasionally other motorsports such as MotoGP, IndyCar, WEC, DTM etc.

  • I am a plane and aviation enthusiast and know a probably unhealthy amount about commercial aviation and planes. I’m currently reading The Jet Engine, a fascinating insight into the design, development and manufacture of the modern jet engine.

  • I play chess, mostly online, but occasionally offline too. My chess.com and lichess.org accounts are anonymous, like my personal blog, but my rating on chess.com is currently hovering around 1000-1100.

  • I listen to a lot of music, including genres as diverse as heavy metal, k-pop, EDM (yes, I am aware of the can of worms I am opening by using that term), classical, movie and videogame soundtracks.

  • I play the piano. Poorly, yes, but still. I sort of kind of taught myself how to play the keyboard as a kid, and was sort of kind of decent at it, but I’m super rusty now; and anyway, the piano is a surprisingly different ballgame.

Contact me

You can find my LinkedIn page here.

My GitHub page is here. You may be sorely disappointed to see a lot of empty repositories for projects that never were. My excuse is that I’m young, and I have time to get to them… someday. We’ll see. Certainly, I will update Dust and perhaps make some more, even cooler stuff, and perhaps dust (heh) off some of the older ones.

If you’d like to contact me by email, feel free to drop me a line at hello (at) neilbaner (dot) net. (Does doing this actually stop spambots?)

For professional/academic matters, my work email address is neil (at) nus (dot) edu (dot) sg. If you’d like to meet me in person, you can book an appointment with me here.

I have an anonymous personal blog, but I’d rather keep that off here - it’d be a lot less anonymous otherwise :) If you know me personally, just ask me for the link.
